Mississippi has some of the highest rates of food insecurity and chronic illness among seniors in the country. Many elderly residents—especially those in low-income and rural areas—struggle to get the fresh, nutritious food they need to stay healthy. For some, limited mobility, lack of transportation, and fixed incomes make grocery shopping nearly impossible. Others simply don’t have access to fresh produce where they live.
Through our Sustaining Our Seniors Initiative, we work to address food insecurity and chronic illness among seniors in Mississippi, particularly in low-income and rural areas, by delivering fresh, healthy food, nutritious juices, and helpful nutrition education directly to those in need. Youth are employed to prepare food boxes and connect with seniors, building intergenerational relationships and making a positive, lasting impact in the community.
Seniors pick up a food box packed with 12-15 lbs of fresh, locally grown produce—including seasonal fruits, vegetables, and staples like potatoes, greens, and onions. We make sure everything is easy to prepare and nutrient-dense to support heart health, blood sugar control, and digestion.
Since many seniors are homebound or lack transportation, we deliver these boxes directly to their doors—removing one of the biggest barriers to healthy eating.
Food is medicine, and many seniors struggle to eat enough fresh produce daily. Our cold-pressed juices make it easier to get the nutrients they need in an easy-to-digest form. These blends are designed to:
✅ Reduce inflammation
✅ Support heart health
✅ Balance blood sugar
✅ Aid in digestion
✅ Boost immune system
✅ Increase energy levels
Food alone isn’t enough—we also want to empower seniors with the knowledge and skills to make healthier choices long-term. That’s why we host:
• Cooking demos featuring quick, affordable, and nutritious meals
• Farm-to-table gatherings, where seniors connect over fresh meals and meet the farmers growing their food
• Food preservation workshops, teaching easy ways to store produce and make it last longer
Mississippi’s seniors are facing serious health challenges that could be prevented or managed through proper nutrition. Investing in food access today means:
✅ Fewer hospital visits and medical complications
✅ More independence and better quality of life
✅ Economic support for local farmers & food suppliers
✅ Stronger, healthier communities overall
